Politics have invaded my Cardinal games!

Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!  It is with deep disgust that I write this.  I thought my baseball was a safe haven from all those stupid political commercials we are all already sick of.   But no.  Isn't anything sacred anymore?   Leave our sports alone you big bunch of dummies!  Yuck    8-(       (That's supposed to be a mad face in case you wondered).

Poor Marti

Marti and Misses Kitty
Our vet, Mac, called today and told me that Marti's white count came back nearly double what it should be and he wants to start him on an additional antibiotic.  Know wonder the little guy doesn't feel good.  Mac put him on Doxycyclene and Clindamaicin.  I can give him an asprin twice a day to help keep the fever down.  What we do know is that there is an infection somewhere in his body.  What we don't know is where.  So blasting it with anribiotics.  Please keep your fingers crossed he gets better.  Please, please, please.

And then there is this little red Chevy Impala that Rick is currently driving while the Subie gets repaired.  It is a flex/fuel vehicle, first one of those we've ever driven.  But it has one serious flaw and it is a big problem (see picture below).

Kansas...EWE!
We actually got an extra discount becasue we told the rental agent that we were not happy with the license plate.  We asked him to switch the plates but he said he couldn't.  I guess Rick could just drive it without plates.  Ya know, throw it in the back seat or something.  People will understand.

Whirlwind day

Rick and I both had our regular check-ups today.  Along the way we also stopped in to have lunch with my parents which I really, really had wanted to do more of this summer but was unable to due to campaigning.   But before we could do that we had to run our 5 year old cocker, Marti, to see Mac for the day because Marti has been feeling punky for the last two weeks and this morning he threw up twice.  I suspected that he was running a fever but now he added puking so off to the vet he go.  We picked up Marti at 4:30 after a bunch of blood work and the usual other samples collected from a pooch.  Mac will know more tomorrow when he gets the blood test results back.  Fingers crossed for nothing serious.  It's always something!  In the meantime I guess I have to start the job search.  Hopefully I can have something lined up before December 31st of this year.

The parts are in!

Well, most of the parts are in, enough to get started on it.  The Subaru is going into the shop to get repaired from when we hit the deer, or actually he (a little fork buck) hit us on our way home from campaigning a couple of weeks ago.  I have been holding it together with duct tape since then.  (You can look back in my blog and see the pics.)   We didn't have time to address it during the campaign so it was put off until now.  It will be nice to have it fixed!  :-)

Dead animal day.

None of the pets, thank goodness, but it's what they brought me.   One of the dogs showed up with the south-bound end of a north-bound rabbit.   Then there was a scuffle over it with the dog and a couple of the cats.  It was grab and run time.  About an hour of so later one of the cats strolls toward the garage with a bird in its mouth.  Why or why do they feel the urge to bring you what they just killed?   One time I opened the garage door and there was a big pile of pin feathers swirling about, never found the rest of the bird.  I know they kill and eat smaller animals but I would rather not be included in their feasts.  Yuck!

It is showering meteors!

I saw about a dozen last night and two really bright ones tonight so far.  Quite a show!  Trying to stay awake a little longer.

The nerd in me...

...compels me to remind everyone about the Perseid Meteor shower that is going on the next three nights.  Translation, lots of shooting stars so get you butt outside tonight and look up at the show that God is putting on for us.  It can be up to 60 meteors an hour, little ones that are quick and big one's that change colors streaking across the sky.  That's up to one a minute folks so, I repeat, get your butt out there and look up!  Okay, now the nerd in me feels better.  And the other thing I wanted to reflect on tonight is comfort food.  Specifically, for me today, it was icecream.   Five scoops from the Paris Exchange.  Yes, just for me and I ate it all.  Everyone else got their there own.  Amber was just laughing at me.  But I had to get it out of my system and hey, I'm down 19 pounds from campaigning in the heat!   I'm just glad I didn't go buy a half gallon.   It would not have stood a chance.   LOL

Ya know, ya put those things out a few here one day and a few there...

the next time out...but when it comes to picking up the signs, YIKES!  Two solid 9 hour days picking those blasted things up.  People don't want those things in their yard in the first place.  Those that are kind enough to allow it deserve to have them taken up ASAP.  We drove 166 miles in Monroe County today alone.  Started at 9:30 and got back to the house at 7:00 and then had to box those suckers up.  Whew!  Glad that's done!  I could never have completed it without help from some wonderful people.  Thank you!  I am beginning to feel like I can get my life back but I still have a couple of loose ends to tie up.   Oh, and the parts have been ordered to repair the deer damage on the car.  Still in all I have so much to be thankful for.

Here's a brain dump for you....Lessons learned.

I always knew in my heart that politics wasn't my thing so I should have listened more to my heart than my head.   Lesson learned.
The definition of instanity is doing the same thing over and over expecting different results.  Okay God, I hear you this time and will not go there again.  I thought that since I had PROVEN what a good job I could do for Monroe County that would have helped.  Lesson learned
In Monroe County you can win public office on your last name, or in my opponent's case, her current husband's last name.  (I've been holding that one in for months!)  Lesson learned.
And I wonder if my opponent is bondable.  That was such a black eye on the county last time.  At my meetings and trainings Monroe County was known as "that county that elected someone that couldn't take the job."  Awkward.  Time will tell.
Still, I have a LOT of people that helped me so much and wanted this for me so badly and knew I was the better choice, I owe them a debt of gratitude that I don't know how to repay.  So I really am the lucky one even though I didn't win.
More tomorrow.

I have been fired!

I lost by 38 votes.  So they have effectively fired someone who worked hard for them and computerized the office and made a multitude of other improvements and Monroe County has decided that they would like to settle on someone with no education and is going to go back to a handwritten ledger.  And we wonder why Washington is so screwed up!  That's politics for you!   I thanked the people who supported me, had faith in me and believed in me.  The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over expecting different results.  I'm done with the insanity.
It was quite the ride and I hope you enjoyed coming along with me.  I owe a debt of gratitude to those that supported me and voted for me.  I cannot thank you enough!

Waiting, waiting, waiting

The polls don't close until 7:00.  Then, all of the ballots have to be brought to the courthouse from around the county.  I might know something by 8:30 but not really counting on it.  Prayers please!

The final, final

Worked as usual today.  Had a lot of people stop by to let me know that they had absentee voted for me.  That is always nice.  But still, there is no guarantee on this.  I hope the people that thought I had it in the bag and didn't vote last time get off their butts and make sure they vote this time.  At this point I have to give it to God and ask that it be His will that I win tomorrow, in Jesus name, Amen.  If not, then I pray for the strength and grace to deal with the dissapointment.  No matter what, I have a LOT of people that helped me so much I owe them a debt of gratitude that I don't know how to repay.   I sent out thank you notes to everyone who has shown me that support and we will also have a party for everyone who has helped.   Rick wants to smoke some ribs for them.  :+)

Holding my breath!

Today we started with church in Paris then rushed up to Monroe City to the VFW hall for breakfast. YUM! Afterwards we went around straightening out some signs.  When we got back home I finished writing my last 8 thank you cards.  We wanted to go to the Dry Doc for dinner but when we got there the doors were locked so not sure what is going on there, was really looking forward to a steak off that wonderful grill.  So we went over to Jacs instead.  Man do they have good food!  Came home and tried to spend the evening relaxing.  It was easier to do so tonight because the speaking engagements are over.  I was able to buy a Mexico paper to see my ad in there but not able to get my hands on a Moberly paper yet.  I hope they got it right.  The Appeal did not have the correct ad this last week.   Bummer!
I know that if it is God's plan for me I will win this election.

Coming down the home stretch!

Last night I was just too tuckered out to blog.  It was a hectic day at work and we were sending out a mass mailing to all the rural areas in Monroe County since we started campaigning there first 3 months ago and I thought a reminder of my qualifications might be a good idea.    Rick ran to all the different post offices dropping off the mailers so everyone would get my mailer today.  Then, I was finishing up the thank you cards to everyone who has my sign in their yard.  About 150 of them.
Saturday found us going to a fundraiser in Stoutsville then a couple of VERY successful stops in Monroe City.  (More on that on Monday).  So this week I campaigned in Holliday one night, Madison the next night, Paris the next and Stoutsville and Monroe City today.   I wanted to be seen in all the major areas the last week of campaigning.  Lots of miles on the vehicle this week.  And I am happy to report that the duct tape is still holding!  The parts for the repair are being ordered.
Tonight was the last speaking event before the election.  It was on the courthouse lawn and it was really hot and not a lot of air movement.  YUCK.  I think the weather kept a lot of peope away.  There were a lot more of the candidates there to speak tonight.   My opponent read her speech off of cards not really offering much information but just talking a lot.  I told everyone how grateful I was for the support from my husband and my friends and even people that I do not know well.  The support I have been shown has really touched my heart.  I then said, "I am sure there were some of you that wondered if I could really get the office computerized.  I have done that and then some, so if you needed proof, just look at the office now."  I also explained how my computer experience gives me a decided advantage in knowing what has to be done to protect the county's money.  I told them how I check every single bank account under my care everyday to make sure that everything looks okay.  I also told them that one of my next improvements will be to start balancing everyday and not just once a month and that I knew that this was a necessary next step because of the expereince I had to draw from.  I also asked them to "please" vote for me on August 7th because my mother taught me manners.  Overall I was serious when talking about guarding the county's money but also lighthearted and upbeat for the rest.  I think it went okay.  Afterwards there was an auction to benefit the Paris Senior Center and I think they raised a good amount of money.  We, of course, bought a couple of things.  All in all a very good day.
For the next three days I will need lots of prayers.  We have a busy schedule tomorrow and I have no idea what Monday or Tuesday is going to bring.

We hit the misses

Tonight we went around to those houses where we wanted to catch someone home and no one was there last time we came by.  I made a lot of good contacts and got a lot of support.   When people ask me how I think it's going I tell them that if everyone who says they are going to vote for me actually does vote, I should have no problem winning on Tuesday.  However, whether or not those people actually do what they say remains to be seen.  I am at the mercy of the voting public so who knows how it will turn out.   You don't normally get rid of somebody who is doing a good job but this is politics so it makes no sense.  :+)

Monroe County Appeal

Today's Appeal was significant for a number of reasons:
1)  The Candidate Questionnaire that profiled my opponent and I;
2)  Final ad before election;
(These next two are great)
3)  I received a personal endorsement from prominent people in Madison, Holliday and Paris telling the citizens to vote for me because my education and experience is far and above my opponents;
4)  My old boss wrote an excellent article about voting for the most qualified candidate with very pertinent reasons for voting for me me.
The last two I am SO VERY humbled by, that these fine folks were willing to put their names behind me, WOW.  I can't begin to tell you how that made me feel.
And the icing on the cake was that I closed the month of July in record time.  Balancing to the penny as always!

Mom is home!

Her sodium level has been brought back up to normal and she has some stomach problems to deal with but fortunately it is not serious.  Thank you GOD!!!   Life is becoming more of a frenzy as the election draws near.  One week from today.  So many things to take care of at the end.  Then, throw in month end at work, but that will go smoothly as I have already done my pre-balancing the last two days.
For me the countdown to August 7th has begun.  All prayers are appreciated!

What a day!

Mom is still in the hospital.  She will have another test tomorrow.  I am so torn wanting to be with her and knowing what is already on my plate for election stuff in trying to keep my job.  We did go out and campaign for a while after work tonight.  My was it muggy!  But the reception was good by everyone.  The sunset was gorgeous.
Thank you God for this beautiful day.  Please watch over my mom.  Amen.

Prayer request

On the way to church this morning I received a text from my sister that my mom was in the hospital.  As soon as I got into church I went up to the priest and asked him to include her in his prayers.  I thought to myself, mom would want me in church praying for her.  Apparently her sodium level is seriously low and she is dehydrated.  She spends so much of her time and energy taking care of my dad (who has MS and is in a wheel chair) that she neglects her own care.  Anyone who has ever been a care-giver knows how easily that happens.  She should be released from St. Luke's tomorrow but in the meantime they are running other tests to make sure that this is the only problem she has.  All prayers are appreciated!

Madison Christian Church Fundraiser

The ladies at the Madison Christian Church prepare absolutely delicious cakes to serve with the icecream at this fundraiser.  Yum!   There was a nice crowd and the weather cooperated very nicely.   However, there was a lot of hot air at the event because the politicians were speaking.  LOL  I started my speech by letting everyone know I was running on my qualifications and my achievements made over the past 15 months in the Treasurer's office.  I gave examples of how I have been able to provide better information to the other offices in the courthouse by keeping detailed spreadsheets for all of the bank accounts under my care and I have helped the local cemetery trustees by giving them the pertinent information about their checking accounts and CDs that they need.  I think it went pretty well.  I was upbeat as always.  Only one more speaking event to go.  Yea!  Coming down the home stretch!  All prayers are appreciated!!!!!

Dog People

When I am approached by people's dogs or come to a door where people have a dog I always tell them not to worry about their pet because I am "dog people."   Sometimes people give me a strange look like they don't understand what that means so I tell them that we have a small herd of dogs at home and love all four legged, furry friends.  I even carry treats for the dogs when campaigning and hand them out where ever I can.  Most people get a big charge out of the fact that I am supplied with the dog biscuits.  My whole family is "dog people" as are Rick's.  I can't imagine my life without them and wouldn't have it any other way.   There is no love like the kind shared with a four legged friend (or in some cases three legged, they get along just fine on only three legs).

After a successful day of campaigning...

...I usually have at least  two or three calls that are memorable.  Today there is one that I thought was a gas.  I knock on the door and this nice lady answers and the first words out of her mouth are, "Are you a Jehovah's Witness?"  (I've been called a lot of things in my years, but Jehovah's Witness has never been one of them).  I quickly replied "no ma'am, I'm your Monroe County Treasurer."  "Oh good,"  she replied, "because I was going to send you away if you were."  She smiled and asked, "You are a Christian aren't you? and I said, "Yes ma'am, born and raised Catholic."  After that we had a great conversation and she assured me that I had her vote.  I walked back to the car laughing to myself because of all the different reactions I get from people when they open the door, never in a million years did I think of myself as even remotely resembling a Jehovah's Witness.  This evening the RAIN chased us homeabout 8:00.  We had a pretty good downpour shortly after we pulled into the driveway.  The first one in months.  Yea!!!

See, good as new

I told you I could fix anything with duct tape and a hammer.  LOL  At least it's still drivable.
We did go out campaigning some gravel roads tonight.  We just took the truck instead.  If it wasn't so dog gone HOT we could cover more territory.  The surprise of the eveing was coming home and when we hit the bean field just before crossing the bridge (where we see deer every night on our way home) there was a HORSE in the field eating the beans, not too far from the deer!  Talk about doing a double take.  Neither one of us ever expected to see a horse in the bean field.  We immediately called the neighbors to let them know their horse was on the loose.

Oh Deer!!

Yep, got nailed while we were out campaigning tonight.  The overall campaigning went well but the trip home....
It was a little buck that came running out of a corn field on 154 and ran right into the right front side of the car.  He broke his neck and was killed instantly.  The Subaru sustained damage to the right front and side.  We were able to make it home at which time I immediately called the insurance company.  We now have a claim number and can begin the process of getting it fixed.  In the meantime I duct taped it (I tell people I can fix anything with duct tape and a hammer) so nothing will rub on the tire and it is still drivable.  I'll post a duct tape picture tomorrow.  Rick and I are both fine and the air bags did not deploy.  So, major bummer.

Yesterday was Rachael Bringer's wedding

Rachael is our 10th Circuit Judge and presides over 3 countines including Monroe.  I got to know her while working for Dick Fredrick.  She and Dick have been friends for many years.  She was always really nice when she was in the office.  Then I got to know her better when I started at the courthouse.  I have to tell you that she looked GORGEOUS on her wedding day.  Almost like a Barbie doll she was so perfect.  And the receiption was equally as elegant, complete with a sit-down lunch, linens and a string quartet.
Me in a dress - take  a picture!
The food was delicious and did I mention how beauriful Rachael looked?  Bobby is a lucky man.  Actually, they are both very blessed for having found each other.  Rick and I wish them the very best.

Three places at once!

Today we campaigned our way up to Monroe City for the sidewalk sale.  There were some really good deals and I got to shake some hands in every shop we stopped in.  We left with a chair and 3 bags of goodies.  Afterward we headed up to Palmyra for Judge Bringer's wedding (more on that tomorrow).  Very, very nice.  We then campaigned our way back through the county and I was able to put out a couple of signs in really good locations.  (Honestly, the sign thing just wears me out.  Going back to straighten them or replace them if one is missing.   It's the part of campaigning I really don't like.)  Later in the day we campaigned our way over to Madison for the Lion's Club tractor pull.  I was a sponsor of the event.  I like to watch the trucks pull.  I think Crystal Wolfe may have won that segment tonight.  I walked around and visited with a lot of people at the tractor pull.  And the good Lord blessed us with a beautiful sunset.

I was a sponsor of the tractor pull so I was able to hang my sign.

Monroe County 4-H Sale

Zac and me
4-H is one of those clubs that I always wanted to be in when I was growing up but unfortunately I was never afforded that opportunity.  I remember asking my mom, "I want to join a 4-H club, can I join 4-H please?"  So, I get an extra big kick out of supporting the kids with their projects and sales.  The Fair has been going on all week with different exhibits and animal showings every day in this HEAT.  I feel the kids pain as I have been out everyday campaigning in this HEAT.  At least we had a break today.  The sale went long, but it went well and was very well attended by a lot of the local businesses and, of course, the politicians!  Paul Quinn, Mike Whelan and I bought Blue Ribbon Hams.  I bought Zac Baladenski's ham.  I had bid on 3 other kids hams but they all went out of my price range.

Our neighbors the Francis's were there.  Their youngest, Ally, was in the lead line.  Seems like just yesterday Barb and Tony brought her home from the hospital.  She is growing up so fast.  Where does the time go?  She looked awesome in her outfit with her hair all in curls so I snapped a pic of her and her dad, Tony.  She really looked great!
Ally & Tony Francis

Then, for the finale, I saw these two guys laying next to each other.  I believe they were there to be sold tonight.  Anyway, the one in the front somehow had fallen asleep with a food bowl attached to each end!  Now how did it manage that?  It was so funny I busted out laughing.  Had to share a pic of that with you.
Future 4-H hams?
The Fair is always entertaining.  All in all it seemed to me the sale was a big success for the kids and 4-H.

Sweet Corn Is In!

One of my favorite times of year!   And we got most of it picked before the coons could get it, woo hoo!  It's not quite as good as past years, but the stress on the plants has been tremendous so I am just happy to have any.
Tonight when we were out campaigning, we ran across an impressive piece of welding work.  The flowers and a lion face are all made out of horse shoes that have been welded together and painted.  It was so unique that I had to share.

Campaign tan

Being "fair skinned" I usually try to avoid the sun whenever I can.  But last time I did this I was darker (although on me it's hard to tell) than I had been in a long while.  We called it my Campaign Tan, complete with tan lines where you really don't want them.  I take off my shoes and it lookes like I am wearing socks my feet are so white compared to my legs.  It's hilarious.   However, I know I must have sweated off at least 5 pounds today, so the weight loss is happening.  Rick and I were out in the sun for more than 3 hours straight before getting in the A/C for a break.  WOW, HOT!   Did I say WOW, HOT?    Our clothes were soaked through.  I like going out and meeting people when we are knocking doors but the heat makes it a so much harder.   Just like last time I keep plugging away, only I'm a little browner right now.  LOL

Still recovering from this weekend!

I love having family come to the farm.  There is so much to do here and we always have a good time.  There were 4 adults and 6 kids, 4 of which were teenage girls.  Add to that the different activities that we were running to and it made for quite the whirlwind weekend.  But none of that ever kept me from getting out and campaigning.   Tonight I met a couple of characters.  One was a German Shepard, a big one.  We pulled up and Rick and I saw it at the same time and said "Oh!" at the same time.  Actually, she was pretty cool.  And the other one, I was outside talking to a nice lady and I could hear this noise coming up behind me and I turned around to see a VERY LARGE St. Bernard.  I, of course, just started talking to him and gave him a treat and rubbed his ears and other than he couldn't keep his nose out of my butt, everything was just fine between me and him and I left with the lady's vote and a sign in her yard.  :-)

Sissy and I went early to pitch in and help work the gate from 8-10, then we jumped in the truck and rode through the parade.  Afterwards we toured the surrounding festivities and bought things here and there, supporting the cause.   After campaigning all afternoon Saturday we went to see some great fireworks at a party at a friend's house and, of course, I campaigned there also.

Swinkey Picnic

What a whirlwind weekend!   Today was the infamous Swinkey Picnic at Indian Creek.  They serve a great meal and then all the candidates speak.  Martha and Dorsey came with us and we set up a tent to hand out my information and free bottles of cold water.  Thank you friends!  The cold water was very well received.(The Swinkey Picnic always delivers on the heat and the food).  I walked around the festivities and campaigned everyone I could find and handed out candy to the kids.  When it was speech time I let everyone know how I am a watchdog over the county's money.  I explained how I have kept my promises since taking office by computerizing the office, running it full-time and I kept the candy tradition.  And by no longer purchasing the old ledger pages, I saved the county that money.   And I asked them to vote Powell by saying, "I have more progress to make but I can't do it without their vote".   My was I surprised when I got compliments about my speech from the Republican candidates!   Maybe I can get them to swing my way.  :-)

Busy weekend on the horizon

Over the past two days we have campaigned all morning, most of the afternoon and again in the evening and it has been very humbling to hear from people that they have heard how hard I have worked to get the Treasurer's office to where it is today.  I am always surprised when they tell me that they know I have been doing a good job.  I appreciate their trust and faith in me.  This evening I went to the Old Thresher's Fish Fry.  I have been going to this for years.  I always enjoy visiting with my friends there, especially Howard and Karen Ramsey.  We have been big Noodling supporters for 10+ years and have worked hard with Howard to get a Noodling season in Missouri.  Seven states adjoining Missouri and many others have a handfishing season, why is Missouri left out?
And on a family note, Rick's daughter, the grandkids, my sister and her kids are all coming up this weekend for Rick's birthday.    :-)

Campaiging just isn't the same...

...without Cardinal games.  I really enjoy my Cardinal baseball and I am ready for the All-Star break to be over.  Campaigning with the Cardinals on the radio is our usual thing and I can't wait for Friday when they will be back on the radio.
We devoted the entire day and evening to knocking doors today.  I was able to get out some signs in PRIMO locations and I met a whole lot of nice people.  We are also gearing up for a house full of company this weekend for Rick's 66th birthday along with a full schedule of political activities.  Busy, busy, busy!

When we were out campaigning tonight we came across a lot of deer - all over the place.  We also had a good visit with a friend of ours that we hadn't seen in awhile.  But the funniest thing was a houseful of old english bull dogs, 4 to be exact, 3 adults and a brindle puppy that was just the cutest thing ever!  These guys had just come out of the water and were VERY friendly - immediately soiling my pants with their muddy feet and covering me in that lovely wet dog smell.  PU!  (But still very cute.)  I gave them all treats while I was winning over the owners.  It was really quite comical but I know I left with their vote.  And I was able to get a sign out in a really good spot.  All in all a very successful evening.

Another long day and

I have 30 more to go.  After work today I had the Board meeting at the Manor.  It was fairly cut and dry but lots going on, all good.  Then I knocked doors for a little while before going home to work on more signs.  I had to glue the wires in a bunch more of them to have them ready for campaigning rigorously again.  We did get out and campaign during the heat but had to be real careful and pace ourselves whereas with the cooler weather (90s LOL) it will be easier to cover more territory. It is a busy week and weekend ahead.  Whew!

Madison Car Show and Parade

This is a big fund raising event for the community of Madison and brings cars from the 1920s to the 1970s.  It was another very hot day so that held the parade participants to a minimum.  The parade got started a little early so there weren't a lot of kids to throw candy to but I did my best to hit the ones that I saw.  Then we went to the car show and made our way around to each booth that was selling one thing or other and we bought a bunch of 50/50 tickets.  Other than being very hot, it was a good time.  I love cars but it's really not Rick's thing.  Later in the day my friends Linda and Tim came to the farm to help me finish celebrating my 50th.  We went to church then came home and had a great steak dinner with all kinds of fresh vegs from the garden including SWEET CORN.   Yum!

Holliday Christian Church-Politics and Icecream

After work Rick and I made it over to Holliday for the Christian Church's fundraiser.   It was another speaking event.   They had it in the church's basement due to the treamendous heat outside.  They drew a big crowd for the cake, icecream and politic-ing.  I was one of the last to speak because that's the way I fall on the ballot.  I gave a good, informative and timely speech about the many changes that I have brought to the Treasurer's office over the past year and let them know that I have more improvements planned for the future.  Everyone seemed to listen very intently.   I have a lot of support in Holliday and most of the residents are very civic minded.  I appreciate that quality in a community.
I am still recovering from the ballgame last night, this getting older thing takes a lot of energy!  ;-)

Happy Birthday Me!

I rolled over the big 50 on the 5th.  Rick and I spent some family time early in the day and I always try to see my mom on that day cause she's the reason I am here.  Then we went to the Cardinal Baseball game and oh my was it HOT!!!!   We sat in the Commissioner's Box seats in the front row just off to the right of the dugout.  It was really awesome.  We had our picture taken in the dugout before the game.  And the Cardinal's won the game!  What a great birthday present!  Happy 50th Birthday Me!

Happy Birthday America!!!!

We started the day with a big parade in Monroe City.  There was lots of patriotism!  And even patriotic animals!   The patriotic pony was my favorite followed by Baxter the patriotic puppy.  We all enjoyed the day celebrating America's birthday in Monroe City.

Can it get any hotter?

Forget I asked, it probably will.  I finished closing out the month at work today, balanced to the penny as I do every month.  Next step will be the Treasurer's 6 month recapitulation (aka summary).  I will finish that on Friday because I won't be at work on Thursday because it's my 50th Birthday so I am taking the day off to celebrate this milestone.  I am sure glad God has had plans for me and kept me around this long.  I have had a wonderful life and I am very blessed and I know it.  I am very grateful.
I hope everyone has a happy and safe 4th of July tomorrow.

Jac's Restaurant

After church on Sunday, we went to the new restaurant in Paris called Jac's Restaurant.  It is Mexican and American and VERY good.   We had breakfast there before heading to Moscow Mills to have dinner with my family for my birthday.  We had another great meal and some even better family time.  We get together and all just start talking about anything and everything, playing catch-up with each other.  Afterward, we brought Marissa and Meghan home with us to help with the parades we have coming up.  It should be great fun!

Dog Days

And not just because of the heat.  When we were out campaigning along the county line we ran across lots of critters.  I was rushed by two good sized Rottwielers(sp?).  When we pulled in the driveway Rick saw the dogs and said, "Have your pepper spray ready."  I wasn't worried.  I had my treats ready and said to the dogs, "Hi guys" and gave them each a treat.  They were good dogs that just look and behave aggressively at times but they didn't phase me at all.  I told the owners that they need not worry because we are "dog people" and have many of our own at home.  Then a couple of houses later there was a daschund and mini pincher that greated me when I got out of the car but as I was walking up the steps of the deck a large black nose poked out from between the stair treads.  I just started laughing and gave the lab mix a treat.  They were all good dogs.  Then there was the farm with about a dozen turkeys and 30 chickens running around everywhere.  Not a dog or cat in sight.  I was hoping those people were home so I could ask them about there collection of critters but no one was home.  At another house was Baxter and Sadie and they were both really friendly dogs.  So it was kinda animal adventure day.

Paul Quinn's Fundraiser

Paul Quinn is our State Representative and he is up for election this year also.  He is an extremely nice Irish Catholic young man who does not have a political agenda.  His agenda is what is best for Missourians and he's always willing to listen and truely cares about making Missouri better for us, our kids and our grandkids.  So, tonight after work, we went campaigning on the way to Paul's fish fry.   I even got another sign out which was nice.  I just wish I felt better.  Still trying to mend from the stomach flu last weekend.   I made it to all the important engagements scheduled for this week, but just barely.  It was nice to sit in the air conditioning tonight and enjoy a great meal with friends and supporters.  As soon as we got home I went straight to the garden to give it some water and TLC before the sun went down.

Financial Audit

I had an auditor in my office yesterday.  He was looking at numbers for the detailed financial audit.    I had him sit at the other (cleaned off) desk and showed him where I kept the 2010 and 2011 records and let him do his thing.  He made notes on his computer and lots of copies.  I explained to him that the 2010 records were that of the previous treasurer and that I produced most of the 2011 records.  When he got ready to leave I asked him if he was able to find everything and he said, "Yes, I found everything I needed.  Thank you for your help.  I can really see the improvements you made in this office and I like the way you keep your records.  It made everything very easy for me to get the information I was looking for."  I thanked him for his comment and he let me know that he would have his report done in a couple of weeks.  That went VERY well for an audit experience!

Paris Methodist Church Ladies Salad Supper (say that 3 times fast)

Well, after work tonight, since it's SO HOT outside, I was very happy to have a place to go inside!  It was a festive and delicious evening and I had a great time visiting with the ladies at the salad supper.  The guest speaker talked about her rebuilding trip in Joplin where she was able assist the Extreme Home Makover crew with several of the houses they built on their 7 houses in 7 days show where she helped mostly with landscaping.  It must have been a very rewarding.   Help others and you help yourself!

Monroe County Democrat Club

After work today, we had our Democrat meeting in Madison so Rick and I decided to campaign in the area on our way to the meeting.   We made stops along Highway 151.  That is a LONG highway.  It will probably take us one more day to complete.  There are some really pretty houses along this road.
The meeting was another good rally to get us all fired up to get out the vote in August and November.  There have been a lot of political meetings to attend with this being a Presidential year.  I hope I can stir up enough votes for a win!

Chris Koster
This is an annual event for Democrats in North-East Missouri to have a rally.  It gives the big Dems (like our AG at right) a chance to talk to us and then the little guys like me get up and introduce ourselves.  You get a nice meal and drink for $1.00.  Ya can't beat that price.  It was a nice evening for it and I needed the break from campaigning tonight because I still don't feel well.  Hopefully tomorrow I will feel more human as I have a busy day!

Relay for Life and stomach flu

or possibly something I ate at Relay.  Not sure which but it has not been a fun 24 hours.  Relay for Life had a good turnout and the weather cooperated nicely.   The suvivors walk is always inspirational.  Rick and I were both exhaused when we got home last night and my tummy didn't geel right.  By 2 am I was up involuntarily revlieing my self of the contents of my stomach.  That went on for several hours.  I think I got to sleep about 6 am.  Needless to say, I was worthless all day Sunday and Monday isn't looking to peachy either.  :-(

The banner

Tonight was the big tractor pull in Paris, but before we were able to go to that, I had to knock some doors after work, and I got a few more signs out.  I was also a sponsor of tonight's show so we were allowed to put a banner up on the gate and they read Mary Lynn Powell, Treasurer of Monroe County over the PA system.  Now that's a way to reach a BIG part of Monroe County.  It was a successful day but there is a lot more work to be done.

Treasurer's Update

Things at the office have been going very well.  First, I will be finishing up my sixth month of closing the books both manually and using the new software program.  It is twice the work right now, but this is a necessary step when going from manual books to computer books.  I balance to the penny every month and all monies are in their proper place.  Second, I am getting ready for my first 6 month "Treasurer's recapitulation" (which balances the last 6 months overall and compares the numbers to the budget) using the new computer software.  The more prepared I am for the end of this month the better.  And third, there are the last two policies (Internal Control Policy and Collateralization Policy) which the county should have in place to be compliant with State Statutes.  I have submitted the Internal Control Policy to the Commissioners for their signature and hopefully they will sign it soon.
I always work with Monroe County's best interests in mind.  The bottom line is I love what I am doing.  I love helping anyone who comes to my office.  I have really enjoyed learning the job of Treasurer, converting the books to computer and learning the State Statutes which we are required to follow.  Because I am able to directly enter the data from daily transactions that the Treasurer's Office perfoms, I no longer have to purchase those expensive ledger pages.  I was very happy to save that money.   :-)))     More improvements are on the way!

My new reality show should be....

...the Itch Factor.   Very appropriate since I have had at least a dozen bouts with chiggers, so many mosquitoe bites I lost count, a couple of ticks and one spider bite.  Itch, itch, itch, itch, itch.   My new fragrance is "eau de la chig-a-rid."  I will probably go through a gallon of it before campaign season is over.   And I spray before we go out and scrub down after we get home.  Yes, the bugs are bad this year.
But I did get more signs out in Monroe City and finished another two blacktop roads.  Making progress with little, tiny baby steps and lots of scratching.

Paris Chamber Meeting

Tonight was the quarterly meeting of the Paris Area Chamber of Commerce with cake and ice cream provided by Nancy Baca, State Farm Agent.  It was a good meeting with a lot of new ideas talked about for the Paris area.  Rick gave the invocation and did a fine job.
Charles Holland gave a great talk about using social media to get the word out about the businesses that Paris has to offer.  No Paris locations/restaurants
/stores, nothing, pops up when googled.  There was a lengthy discussion about how to correct that situation.  Charles gave us a broad overview of the options that are available to get the information online to draw people to the Paris area.  The meeting was very informative.

Honor thy Father

And if your father is gone, honor his memory.
This is my dad, Warren Kinninger, in his patriotic colors.  I was able to spend the afternoon with him and the rest of the family today and I thoroughly enjoyed myself.  We talk and laugh and tell stories on each other.  Today we went through my sisters wedding album from 22 years ago.  Walking my sister down the aisle was such a challenge for my dad as his MS had progressed to the point where he was in a wheel chair most of the time.  He started working using parallel bars, with a physical therapist, months before the wedding trying to get strong enough to walk his youngest child to the altar.  He  accomplished his goal!  The things dad's do for love.   :-)

First man in his underwear

It happened two years ago also, but today's man was a little younger (and it was 5:00 in the evening).  Yikes!  I looked away and just handed him my flyer and apologized for interrupting his day and then moved quickly back to the vehicle.  Other than that it was a pretty successful day and week.  I put out 15 more signs this week at various places as I campaigned.  Today, midway through campaigning in Monroe City, we went to a Tractor Show fund raiser in memory of Kolton Edward Karr, a young man who was majorly into tractors.  We had some good fish and chatted with others stopping by to eat and admire the tractors.  After that we campaigned our way back home cause the rain was chasing us.

Good-Bye Cedar Grove Baptist Church

As we were out campaigning some of the 700 gravel roads tonight we went past Cedar Grove Cemetery and the old church beside it and the roof had caved in on the church!  The end of an era I am sorry to say, the church roof fell in today.  What I am sure was once a thriving church along side a beautiful cemetery in and amongst gigantic, old oak trees is now no more.  Such a peaceful and serene place, I can see why they built a church here.  Some of the headstones date to the 1700s.  A piece of real history is now gone.  :-(

Flag Day

And a busy Flag Day it was!  At 3:00 there was a Flag Day ceremony at the Courthouse.  The American Legion Paris Post, DAR Group and another handful of us were in attendance.  It was a beautiful ceremony.

This little Flag Day angel joined the ceremony.
After work Rick and I went campaigning.  I had 4 different people ask me to put a sign in their yard.  ASKED ME.  You can practically knock me over with a feather when that happens.  I am so VERY grateful!  God's watching over me.  Later in the evening I went to the Baptist Church Ladies Salad Supper.  Oh my goodness, the array of delicious food was wonderful.  Those Baptist Ladies know how to put out a spread.  There was a very insightful program given by a smart and humerous 94 year old lady named Elizabeth who had brought some of her 18th century antiques, mainly candle making/burning pieces and even some whale oil burners.  She was quite remarkable and kept the audience's attention during her entire talk.  She's got spunk.  I want to be like her when I grow up!

4H Camp

All this week is 4H Camp over at the park.  The Political Officials from the Courthouse are invited to attend lunch for Taco Day and see all the kids in action.  It was a really fun break in our day.  There was a table full of us that went.  They are very strict about table manners and if any of the kids gets caught putting their elbows on the table while eating they get called out and have to get up and run around the room while everyone claps and chants.  It is always funny to see one of the kids get caught with elbows on the table and watch the adults at our table all make double sure not to put our elbows on the table - cause they can call us out, too!  ;-)

BIG SIGNS

After several weeks of planning we were ready to put out some 2' x 4' signs.  The fact that it finally rained made the job much easier.  So after my Board meeting at the Manor we put them out at strategic locations and I think they turned out great!  Rick worked really hard to get the signs ready to be mounted and stuck into the ground and dear friend Elmer helped us get them all set up in their new locations.   I couldn't have done it without them.  Thanks you guys!

There is something new blooming...

...cause my sinuses are going crazy!    It was nice to have a rest from the campaign trail today.  It is an unwritten rule that you DO NOT campaign on Sundays.  You don't even put out signs or anything.  Sunday is  the Lord's Day.  So I used the time to catch up in the garden (the corn is tasseling!) and doing misc chores around the farm that have needed my attention for the last several weeks.   I feel closer to God when I am in the garden or out in the woods.  It is a really nice feeling.  Here's hoping for a good week!

Here, there and everywhere

We began the day running errands around town and visiting the new 2D Energy open house.  It was well attended, they had delicious food and we got our propane cooking tank filled for $5.00!   There were also several people there that told me I could put a sign out in their yard.  I hit the jack-pot three times at one stop.   Then we campaigned our way up to 5:30 Mass at Monroe City, getting out several new signs in good, strategic places.  After Mass we headed over to Madison for a 50th/25th Anniversary Party combo for Guy and Sandy Callison (50th) and Brad and Michelle Callison (25th).  It was a wonderful party and I was so happy they invited us to share in their special celebration.  It, too, was well attended and a lot of my friends were there along with almost the entire town of Holliday and many from Madison.  We had a really great time and came home absolutely exhausted from the busy, but very good, day.

Dinner at the Dry Dock....

...and then we hit the road.  We have been going to the Dry Dock since we moved here in 95.   We have seen it go through many owners but Hank has done the best with the place.  The food is wonderful and you can get a great meal there anytime.  Rick and I highly recomend this eating establishment.  Afterwards, we hit the road doing gravel and blacktop.  I ran across one voting Monroe Countian who commented, "Thank you for coming so far out to introduce yourself to us, no one ever comes out here."  At another house a young woman said "You must really want to keep your job if you're campaigning way out here."   What can I say?  They're right!  I'll do whatever it takes, even going to the ends of the gravel, to find voters and say Hello.    We put out a few more signs and had good encounters with everyone.  Many people remember when I came by their house 2 years ago.   I guess I left an impression of one kind or another.    :-)

Good-bye Pastor Ben

The Pastor at the Methodist Church in Paris has been reassigned.   Ben Mulford has been the Pastor for the last 4 years here in Paris.  There was a carry-in dinner for him last night at the church so on the way out to knock doors we stopped by to wish him and his family well on their next journey in life.   I wanted to shake his hand one last time and thank him for his service to our community.  Rick and I don't go to the Methodist Church for regular Sunday service but many of our friends do and have always spoken very highly of Pastor Ben.   We have attended many of the lunches and auctions that the church holds throughout the year and Ben was always a wonderful host.  I hope he and his family experience many new blessings in the years to come.    Good-bye Pastor Ben.

I received very positive responses from everyone I met along Route A tonight.  We also campaigned DD and TT.  We were at the northwest corner of the county tonight.  Not intentially though, I just wanted to get all the way up Route A but sometime we wander off our original planned path.  On Route A, I encountered some really nice folks that raise white tail deer.  One of their does had just had her baby and I got to see the little one up close.  Such a precious gift from God and the perfect was to end my campaign trail tonight.  And I was invited to put out more signs.  Thank you God for a wonderful evening.

Opossum encounter

Rick and I campaigned in familiar territory tonight and it was fun remembering our last visit to so many of the homes.  Such beautiful places tucked in all around Monroe County and so many nice people.    There were  dogs at many of the homes so I got in lots of petting tonight.  The funniest thing I saw was when I walked aound the side of a house to find an opossum standing in the middle of a cat food bowl having dinner.  I backed off right away as it looked pretty scraggelly(sp?) and possibly diseased.  It didn't like seeing me any more than I liked seeing it so we parted ways in a hurry.   I always have to be prepared for ANY kind of  critters, some desirable and some not so desirable.

After church on Sunday, Rick and I went to my mom's and dad's for a family reunion with my dad's side of the family.   It was the first time I was able to get together with my consins since my Uncle died in January.   It is always great to get together with them and we had a fun visit with everyone.

The ground is so hard it is a real challenge to get my signs into the ground.  We carry a screw driver and a hammer with us to make a hole in the ground and even that doesn't work some of the time.  Fortunately, there is rain in the forecast for tonight.  I hope they're right this time and not just for me but for the farmers too!  I think they need the rain more than I do because the crops are at a critical growth stage.  Does anybody know a reliable rain dance? We've been all over the county visiting the various fundraiser's about the area.  And we're not done yet.  HOWEVER, this is an important weekend for another reason - it is to take time to thank those who serve or have served in the Armed Forces for protecting our everyday freedoms.  I have had the chance, and seek out the opportunity, to shake the hands of and thank numerous veterans.  Please do the same every chance you get.

I got yelled at today.

An elderly gentleman wandered into the courthouse in search of help with a piece of mail he had received.  I said, "Can I help you?" and he handed me this piece of unopened mail.  He said, "The last time I got mail that looked like this they wanted me for the service and I went into the Air Force and served there for 32 years."  I shook his hand and thanked him for his service to our country.  He proceeded to tell me very loudly (he was hard of hearing even with the hearing aids he was wearing) that he wasn't sure what to do with this piece of mail.  I could tell he was concerned about it.  As he was telling me about his service in the Air Force and how many metals he had earned and how many bars he had on his uniform I slipped the envelope open and peaked inside to see that it was a piece of junk mail from Beltone hearing aids.  I kid you not.  When I told him what the mail was all about he became VERY IRRATE and started yelling at the top of his lungs that he had told those Beltone people he did not want their junk mail anymore because he already had hearing aids from the Air Force.  At that time he took the hearing aids out to show me the Air Force hearing aids so he began talking EVEN LOUDER without the aids.  After I got him calmed down I told him he can just pitch all junk mail and to try not to let it bother him.  I suggested he make a paper airplane out of their junk mail.  As his loud talking went on for more than 5 minutes, my co-workers had begun coming by my office to make sure that I was okay and not in any danger which I really appreciated!   They could see that I was handling the situation well and did not have a panicked look on my face so they left me to calm this poor, very upset, gentleman down on my own.  When he left my office he felt better and thanked me for my help.  He was really very sweet, just VERY LOUD.  I never know what or who will come through my door, but I always try to make the situation better for whoever it is.

After church this morning we went to a fund raising dessert auction at the Methodist Church in Paris.  This was held to raise money for the kids to go to church camp this summer.  The bids were high and everyone had a good time.  We came home with 4 desserts!  What can I say, it was for the kids and I take this part of my job very seriously.  ;-)     We had spent most of Saturday putting out signs so after we got home today I spent the rest of my time in the garden planting and tending this year's future harvest.  I love watching things grow!

Armed Forces Day

On this special day I would again like to say THANK YOU to everyone who serves or has served this country.  It is because of you that I have the freedoms I do today.  This pic is from a Welcome Home Party for Vietnam Veterans that was held this spring at Mark Twain Lake.  It was on a day that I also did a 2 mile walk in Monroe City to raise money for the senior nutrition center, hence the t-shirt I am wearing (normally I would have been in red, white and blue).  I am with Rick and Holly, a friend of ours who is in the Patriot Guard.  She and her husband, Vern, are very proud to be members of that effort.  It was good to see them as well as take a moment to thank the veterans for their service to our wonderful country.  Rep. Shiveley and Judge Bringer also came to salute the Vietnam Veterans.  It was a wonderful, and long overdue, welcome home party.

Scholarship Night

Tonight I went to the awards ceremony for the graduating seniors at Paris High School.  These are a really great bunch of young adults that will be going out into the world to discover who they really are and they have a good foundation to build on with the education they have received.  There was a nice attendance at the event to see them receive their scholarships.  There were over 50 scholarships awarded.  I was really impressed by the amount of scholarships which help with tuition, books, etc.  A college education isn't cheap and these scholarships will really help the students achieve their goals.  Rick and I are big supporters of higher education.  It is so important to help you succeed in life.

Monroe County Nursing Home Week

Every year Monroe Manor celebrates its residents during Nursing Home Week.  I have always felt that our senior citizens are our greatest natural resource.  So far this week I have attended the balloon release on Monday (see pics) and the Ice Cream Social on Tuesday.  Both events were very well done by the Manor. Today I also checked out the room redos that the Manor is undertaking.  I have wanted to see how the rooms have turned out as they are talked about in the monthly Board meetings that I attend as Secretary to the Board.  The redone rooms look great and feel much more homelike that the older rooms that still  have concrete walls.  I also got to see the progress of the carpet installation in the hallways which is also currently underway.  Both are big improvements for the Manor and I can't wait to see everything completed.

Wedding pics

No, I am not going to post all of the wedding pics.  I am just now downloading the pics and videos I took.  However, I did want to include just one more of Rick and I.  I thought it turned out really nice so I wanted to share it with everyone.  And while it was really great to be able to spend the extra time with my parents this weekend, my back and hips are still sore from sleeping on my mom and dad's pull out couch for two nights.  I must get into shape for campaigning as it requires a lot of physical activity, in and out of the vehicle 50 times in an evening.  It might not sound like a lot but you try it and let me know what you think.  LOL

No campaigning this weekend

I had something MUCH more important to do as my grandson and his beautiful bride got married this weekend!  They held their ceremony at the Missouri Botanical Gardens.  It was a gorgeous day at the gardens and the wedding went off without a hitch.   My granddaughter is in the yellow dress.  She was the the prettiest flower girl ever!  It is always wonderful to have the whole family together.

Retna surgery...

...is absolutely NO fun.   I know of what I speak because I just had my second surgery today.  IT HURTS!  My first surgery in January was really scary but I have a good retna surgeon and I knew what to expect this time.   The surgery in January was more involved due to a tear in the retna in my left eye.  I didn't know that was the problem at first, I just knew that I couldn't see out of my left eye.  And this when I was getting ready to balance the month at work using the new software program I had just set up.  The timing could not have been worse.  I did close the month, it just took a little longer and was more difficult than it had to be since I couldn't see out of one eye.
I am very glad today is over.  The doc said the surgery went well, now I just have to heal.  All prayers are appreciated!
